TRAINING COURSE
Home Safe
A one-day course for parents, family carers, foster carers and residential staff supporting someone whose behaviour challenges, built on Prevent, Support, Protect.
COURSE OVERVIEW
ABOUT THIS COURSE
WHAT THE COURSE COVERS
Home Safe is a one-day course for the people who care at home: parents, family carers, guardians, foster carers and residential staff supporting a child, young person or adult with a learning disability, autism, an acquired brain injury or behaviour that challenges. Everything sits inside our Prevent, Support, Protect model, with most of the day spent on Prevent and Support. Physical skills are a last resort.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
• Understand what is behind the behaviour rather than only reacting to it
• Recognise early warning signs and act before things escalate
• Use de-escalation that works in a family home
• Understand the law on reasonable force, defence of others and the Mental Capacity Act in plain English
• Reduce risks in your home environment before an incident happens
• Use safe disengagement and low-level holding skills proportionately and only as a last resort
• Recognise and avoid positional asphyxia and other physical risks
• Support the person, yourself and the household after an incident
• Record what happened clearly and build a written Home Safe Plan
WHO USES THIS COURSE
Home Safe runs along one of three pathways: family and guardians, foster carers, or residential and supported living staff. The skills are the same; the duties and paperwork differ. It is used by:
• Family and guardians: parents, siblings, adult children and unpaid carers
• Foster carers, including specialist and therapeutic placements
• Residential and supported living staff
• Independent fostering agencies and local authority fostering services
• Special schools, social workers, SEND and transition teams commissioning support for families
